Gamma-ray blazar variability: new statistical methods of time-flux distributions

چکیده
ABSTRACT Variable γ-ray emission from blazars, one of the most powerful classes astronomical sources featuring relativistic jets, is a widely discussed topic. In this work, we present results variability study sample 20 blazars using (0.1–300 GeV) observations Fermi/LAT telescope. Using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) methods, find that probability density functions best describe blazar flux distributions use stable distribution family, which generalizes Gaussian distribution. The suggest average behaviour over period can be characterized by log-stable distributions. For sources, estimate leads to standard lognormal (α = 2). However, few clearly display heavy tail (MLE α < 2), suggesting underlying multiplicative processes infinite variance. Furthermore, light curves were analysed employing novel non-stationarity and autocorrelation analyses. former analysis allowed us quantitatively evaluate in each source – finding forgetting rate (corresponding decay time) maximizing log-likelihood for modelled evolution functions. Additionally, evaluation local allows detect anomalies, transient nature some statistical properties curves. With analysis, examined lag dependence all {(yt, yt + l)} points, described various mixed moments, allowing multiple characteristic time scales implying possible hidden periodic processes.

Radio variability of the gamma - ray blazar 0202 + 149
Analysis of radio light curves of the γ-ray bright blazar 0202+149 at frequencies of 37, 22, 14.5, 8, and 4.8 GHz during the period 1984-1998 reveals a 4-year cycle of variability with substructure on a shorter time scale of about 1.3-yr. The 4.8-37 GHz spectral index of the source gradually increases from −0.04 (T=1990.2) to 0.4 (T=1996.6) and during outbursts shows strong variations with a ti...
متن کاملDistributions of Peak Flux and Duration for Gamma-ray Bursts
Many of the important conclusions about Gamma-Ray Bursts follow from the distributions of various quantities such as peak ux or duration. We show that for astrophysical transients such as bursts, multiple selection thresholds can lead to various forms of data truncation, which can strongly aaect the distributions obtained from the data if not accounted for properly. Thus the data should be cons...
متن کاملRadio to gamma-ray variability study of blazar S5 0716+714
We present the results of a series of radio, optical, X-ray, and γ-ray observations of the BL Lac object S50716+714 carried out between April 2007 and January 2011. The multifrequency observations were obtained using several groundand space-based facilities. The intense optical monitoring of the source reveals faster repetitive variations superimposed on a long-term variability trend on a time ...
متن کاملRapid Variability of Gamma-ray Emission from Sites near the 43 GHz Cores of Blazar Jets
Comprehensive VLBI and multi-waveband monitoring indicate that a single superluminal knot can cause a number of γ-ray flares at different locations. However, the often very rapid variability timescale is a challenge to theoretical models when a given flare (perhaps the majority of those observed) is inferred from observations to lie near the 43 GHz core, parsecs from the central engine. We pres...
متن کاملParsec-scale Blazar Monitoring: Flux and Polarization Variability
We present analysis of the flux and polarization variability of parsec scale radio jets from a dual-frequency, six-epoch, VLBA polarization experiment monitoring 12 blazars. The observations were made at 15 and 22 GHz at bimonthly intervals over 1996. Here we analyze the flux, fractional polarization, and polarization position angle behavior of core regions and jet features, considering both th...
